The 404 1,026- Where we were monitoring that scan (podcast)

The 404 1,026: Where we were monitoring that scan (podcast)
Are you disappointed or psyched that so many new technologies draw inspiration directly from films and TV? First it was Samsung citing "2001: A Space Odyssey" as an influence for their Samsung Galaxy tablet and all the reports of "Minority Report" tech coming soon. And now Google looks like it watched too many Star Trek episodes while designing its augmented-reality glasses. The glasses are an experiment from Google called Project Glass that displays incoming text messages, media playback, driving directions, and more through a small screen in front of the wearer's right eyeball. Along with a prototype video showing a day in the life of a user, the glasses are meant to get technology out of the way and let the user experience life with less distraction, but the video doesn't show the ads that Google will inevitably serve to subsidize the subscription and hardware costs. In fact, a true-to-life Google Glass experience, replete with ads, will probably look more like this. This story and a plague on both Instagram houses in today's episode of The 404.Bathroom break video: This is how metalheads paint a room. This content is rated TV-MA, and is for viewers 18 years or older. The 404 1,028- Where we go Dumpster diving (podcast)

The 404 1,028: Where we go Dumpster diving (podcast)
Richard, our studio engineer, is the inspiration for today's show title that goes along with a story about his old Dumpster-diving days, when he'd raid the Hostess factory at the end of the night to recover "old" Twinkies and Ho Hos.Jeff faced childhood memories of his own this weekend while cleaning out his old closet, unearthing treasures like Palm Pilots, two Sega Dreamcasts, and a box of old CD jewel cases. If you don't know what those things are, you're too young to be listening to The 404.The first story in today's rundown is about yesterday's Easter services and how more churches around the country are embracing the use of tablet computers and smartphones to enrich sermons. Of course, the concept isn't without detractors, but one guy in the Chicago Tribune article actually compares the change to the arrival of the Gutenberg Bible, claiming that the sound of page turning was likely of equal distraction to pastors.More stories leaked from today's episode: Google Maps is under Microsoft fire, Microsoft buys 800 patents from AOL for $1 billion, text message spam and the age of "smishing," and, yes -- Macs can get viruses! This content is rated TV-MA, and is for viewers 18 years or older. If you've ever been curious about what goes on during an online date, definitely check out today's episode of The 404.If you like what you hear, come back next week for another batch of awesome shows -- upcoming guests include Aunt Jill Schlesinger next Wednesday and filmmaker Morgan Spurlock next Friday the 13th!Bathroom break video: Dis is how we do track in Hawaii. This content is rated TV-MA, and is for viewers 18 years or older. The 404 1,023- Where we go one step beyond (podcast)

The 404 1,023: Where we go one step beyond (podcast)
Out of all the silly headlines that squirmed into my Google Reader feed yesterday, "Ashton Kutcher signed on to play Steve Jobs in upcoming biopic" stood out as the most obvious April Fools' prank, but the joke's on us when we find out today that it's true -- the star of such films as "The Butterfly Effect" and "What Happens in Vegas" will portray the Apple luminary in an indie film simply called "Jobs."It's true that the Internet killed the April Fools' Day pranks, but we're obligated by the rules of the Web to spend at least a few minutes talking about our favorites -- get ready for Google Racing,Chrome Multitasking, Kodak LivePrint Kitten, and the YouTube compendium.Join us after the break for Calls From the Public as well as a conversation about the future of public transportation and Google's role in the adoption of driverless vehicles. This content is rated TV-MA, and is for viewers 18 years or older. The 404 1,022- Where we get all of our news on the toilet (podcast)

The 404 1,022: Where we get all of our news on the toilet (podcast)
It's always fun to have a first timer on the show with us, and today we welcome Chenda Ngak, CBSNews.com technology and lifestyle blogger. She's a big videogamer and proud geek, so she's the perfect guest to help us talk about the recent backlash against "fake" geek girls.Speaking of girls, we don't have them on the show very often so it's great to finally get a female perspective on the Reply Girls phenomenon. If you haven't heard about them before, Reply Girls are a group of a dozen women dressed in low cut tops that post video replies to trending YouTube videos, exploiting their sexuality to earn money via YouTube's revenue-sharing program. While certainly a symbiotic relationship between Reply Girl and the weirdos clicking on them, we'll discuss the real victims in the scam and how YouTube is putting an end to it. After a quick break, we'll spend some time mourning the impending end of Best Buy, which may be the next big-box retailer to close down permanently. Finally, we'll track this year's Shorty Awards and update you on the state of Foxconn workers in China. This content is rated TV-MA, and is for viewers 18 years or older. The 404 1,021- Where we're laced with Cinavia (podcast)

The 404 1,021: Where we're laced with Cinavia (podcast)
Stupid Andy sits in the guest seat and he has a bone to pick with Cinavia today. I'm warning you that this discussion is technically the first time we've nerded out about DRM systems so hard, but it's relevant in terms of resale, personal file backups, and the rumor that the next PlayStation console won't allow used games. We also want to talk about the mob mentality of Twitter and how Spike Lee violated its ToS, not to mention his personal stock, in re-tweeting an address he thought belonged to George Zimmerman. In reality, his 240,000 followers received coordinates to a residence belonging to an elderly Floridian couple that weren't thrilled about the subsequent death threats.Other stories from today's rundown include a study claiming 33 is the best age, elephants playing smartphone games, and we'll also get to the bottom of Whodat.is.This content is rated TV-MA, and is for viewers 18 years or older. The 404 1,018: Where we get all our ducks in a row (podcast)
Apple products are mostly used by younger generations, but the company should still recognize the dangers of "high-tech modern architecture." Such is the plea of 83-year-old Evelyn Paswall, a New Yorker taking Apple to court for $1 million after walking face first into the glass door entrance to the Long Island Apple store.Does her case hold water, and should Apple continue to use ugly white tape to let people know glass is a real thing? We'll talk about this story and more on today's episode of The 404. Russ Frushtick is truly the Steve Martin of The 404 co-hosts, but we keep asking him back because well, someone has to talk about video games with Jeff, and it's not me. Speaking of, don't forget to wish Mubakalar a happy 30th birthday tomorrow, because this one's going to hurt. There's lots to talk about with Russ, and first in the rundown is the ending to Mass Effect 3 and the secrets revealed this week about who signed off on it.We'll also get Russ's take on ethics in gaming journalism and the future of the industry with regard to the new Apple iPad. Sale- CoPilot Live GPS for iPhone, $19.99

Sale: CoPilot Live GPS for iPhone, $19.99
At $34.99, ALK's CoPilot Live North America is already one of the least-expensive navigation apps in the iTunes App Store. At $19.99, it's an outright steal. That's the deal ALK is offering this holiday weekend, and you can grab it starting right now.CoPilot Live offers complete turn-by-turn navigation for the U.S. and Canada. Its features include text-to-speech (meaning it announces street names), address book integration, tap-to-call POI listings, and easy switching between different modes of travel (car, bicycle, walking, and so on). You'll definitely want to read Dong Ngo's CoPilot Live road test that covers the highlights and letdowns--but keep in mind the app's been updated since then. For example, Ngo dings it for lacking text-to-speech, but it now has that feature.Still missing, alas, is real-time traffic information, which apparently remains on the coming-soon list. Thankfully, future updates to the app will be free, though any premium services like traffic will cost you.Even without that option, it's hard to pass up a full-featured navigation app for just $20, especially with competitors like Navigon, iGo My Way, and TomTom still selling in the $70-100 range. The only missing ingredient is a dashboard or windshield mount for your iPhone. I recommend heading to a Web site like Eforcity or Meritline and picking up an inexpensive gooseneck mount.

Podcasts apps make their way back to iTunes

Podcasts apps make their way back to iTunes
Podcast applications have made their way back to iTunes. When users type "podcast" or "podcasts" into Apple's desktop iTunes application, they'll find a full listing of programs that allow users to subscribe and listen to audio and video podcasts.Apple's store surprised some searchers yesterday when only the iPhone maker's official Podcasts app was displayed after inputting those queries into the program. Upon searching for the same queries on the iPhone or iPad, all available apps were listed. It's not immediately clear when the podcasts apps listing was restored or what might have caused the omission of third-party search results.Apple launched its standalone app for podcasts back in June. The program allows users to both listen and subscribe to audio and video podcasts.Debate rages over the quality of Apple's Podcasts app. In a posting on the topic back in June, CNET writer Rick Broida offered up three apps that might do a better job handling user podcasts: Downcast, Instacast, and Stitcher Radio.CNET has contacted Apple for comment on the change. We will update this story when we have more information.

iHome iB969- A multifaceted charging station

iHome iB969: A multifaceted charging station
We have to admit, we're suckers for a good charging accessory, and the iHome iB969 fits the bill as a multifaceted charging station for iPods, iPads, iPhones, and other devices you charge via USB.Though the mostly plastic iB969 doesn't exactly ooze sleekness or high-end build quality (pick it up and it feels pretty light), it looks attractive enough and has dual docks for the iPhone or iPod as well as an integrated stand for iPads. To demonstrate its capabilities, iHome on the package depicts an iPad with an iPhone, iPod Nano, and Sony Reader. A look under the unit reveals three USB ports, though only two are for charging; the other is for connecting the charging station to a computer so you can sync the device with your PC (in most cases, with iTunes). The unit comes with three standard USB cables, but you'll have to bring your own for devices that have Mini-USB or Micro-USB connectors, and a separate Apple cable for charging your iPad (there is no iPad dock, just a stand that props up your iPad while charging). To charge the iPad, you need a stronger power source than you'd typically use to charge a cell phone or MP3 player, and the iB969 ships with a 5-volt, 4AMP AC adapter. What's nice is that you can apply that power to your iPhone or iPod in a special quick-charge setting, which basically charges the device at double speed. The only issue is that the charging station has a couple of switches on it marked A/B that are a little confusing to deal with.Read the full review of the iHome iB969.

How to enable iOS 5's hidden panorama camera
Open iBackupBot after it's installed. The backup you just created should be visible. Open the backup to have access to a list of system files. Scroll through the list and find the file titled: Library/Preferences/com.apple.mobileslideshow.plist. Double-click to open the file. If you are presented with a registration dialog for iBackupBot, press Cancel. Screenshot by Jason CiprianiScroll to the bottom of the file. You should see an entry:<key>DiskSpaceWasLow</key><false/>Directly below that, enter the following:<key>EnableFirebreak</key><string>YES</string>Save the file and close it.Screenshot by Jason CiprianiRestore your device from within iBackupBot by clicking on the Restore button highlighted above. Don't worry, you won't lose any apps or settings. Screenshot by Jason CiprianiAfter your device is restored, open the Camera app and tap on the Options button. You should now see a Panorama button. Screenshot by Jason CiprianiTapping on the Panorama button will present you with a new UI for taking a panoramic photo. Follow the onscreen instructions to take a panoramic photo. It's clear why this feature hasn't been released as of yet. Even with the steadiest of hands, the photos we attempted to take came out pretty choppy. The feature should be available on any device with a gyroscope, however, we ran into issues testing on an iPad 2. Your results may vary. (Source: 9to5Mac via Funky Space Monkey)
